What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation requiring immediate dental care to alleviate severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Common emergencies include toothaches, knocked-out teeth, and injuries to the jaw.

Signs of a dental emergency include:

• Intense pain or swelling
• Persistent toothache
• Loose or avulsed (knocked-out) tooth
• Facial swelling accompanied by a toothache
• Extreme tooth sensitivity
• Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth
• Jaw injuries 

What is not a dental emergency?

A dental issue is not usually considered an emergency if it can wait a few days without escalating. For example, a chipped or cracked tooth only requires immediate attention if it is causing pain or involves significant damage.

What’s the best way to handle a dental emergency?

For urgent dental care, contact your dentist immediately. For severe cases, head to the nearest emergency room. Here are some ways to manage pain at home until you see a dentist:

• Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
• Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
• If a tooth is knocked out, place it in a glass of milk until you reach the dentist.
• Use diluted hydrogen peroxide to reduce bacteria.
• Take over-the-counter pain relief.
• Floss gently to relieve gum pressure.

What should I do if I have a toothache?

If you’re experiencing a toothache, call your dentist right away to identify the cause. In the meantime, rinse with warm water, use dental floss to remove trapped food particles, and apply a cold compress to alleviate swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers may also help reduce discomfort. 

What should I do if my dental filling or crown breaks?

If a filling or crown breaks, try to keep any pieces that come loose. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth and use dental cement from the pharmacy to temporarily hold a crown in place. Schedule a dental appointment as soon as possible to prevent further damage or infection.
